The CRM Transition Decade: NPSP, Nonprofit Cloud, and What Actually Changes
Salesforce is moving nonprofits off NPSP and onto Nonprofit Cloud. Here's what actually changes, what doesn't, and how to plan a migration that doesn't blow up your operations.

If your nonprofit runs on Salesforce, there's a good chance you're using something called NPSP, the Nonprofit Success Pack. For more than a decade it's been the standard. Now Salesforce is moving the whole ecosystem onto a new platform called Nonprofit Cloud. It's not a version upgrade. It's a different system.
In February 2026, the major nonprofit Salesforce partner Cloud for Good announced 'Agentforce Nonprofit', Salesforce's AI-enhanced version of Nonprofit Cloud. That confirms the direction. If your organization runs on NPSP, planning the transition isn't optional anymore. It's part of your multi-year roadmap, even if the actual move is still a few years away.
What's Actually Different
NPSP added nonprofit-specific features on top of standard Salesforce, things like recurring donations, household relationships, and program management. Nonprofit Cloud uses a different underlying structure. Donors are represented differently, gifts are stored in different objects, and the relationships between records work differently.
Why does this matter? Because every report, every integration with another tool, and every automation you've built on NPSP is essentially built against an old structure that doesn't exist in Nonprofit Cloud the same way. As the Salesforce partner Mirketa has documented, this is closer to a re-implementation than a simple upgrade.
What Actually Goes Wrong
The four areas that consistently cause pain in these migrations are: keeping recurring donations running without interruption, preserving year-over-year reporting, getting the connections to other tools (email, events, payments) working again, and getting your team comfortable with the new way of working. The technology is solvable. The operational continuity is where projects get hard.
Industry guides put nonprofit Salesforce implementations in the $30K–$100K+ range for consultant fees, and the move to Nonprofit Cloud will need its own implementation effort. Treat this as a real project in your budget, not a routine upgrade.
A Calm Way to Plan This
Approach the transition in three phases. First, clean up your data and consolidate duplicates while you're still in NPSP, never migrate dirty data. Second, make a complete list of every integration and every important report, with notes on who owns each one and how long it'll take to rebuild. Third, do the migration in phases, running the old and new systems in parallel for the things that can't break, like donations and key reports.
And here's the upside, this is also a chance to clean house. Most organizations on NPSP have years of customizations, custom fields nobody uses, and one-off workflows built for problems that no longer exist. A migration is the right moment to retire that baggage rather than carry it into your new system.
What If You're Not on Salesforce?
Even if you're not on Salesforce, the same pattern is happening across the nonprofit CRM world. Vendors are all moving toward AI-assisted, more standardized platforms. Whatever CRM you use, the question is the same, is your data clean and well-organized, and does it connect cleanly to your other systems? If yes, you can adopt new features as they ship. If no, you'll eventually face a similar migration. Only the vendor name changes.
